About the event
Prior to settlement in the 1720s, 98% of PEI was forested. By 1900, this had been reduced to 27%. While no areas of PEI remain completely untouched, we'll visit an example of forest on unploughed land - a site that has never been cleared and farmed.
Our path will take us through beautiful areas of American Beech, Yellow Birch, and Eastern Hemlock, as well as spots heavily impacted by Hurricane Fiona in 2022. We'll look at some of the specialized plants (and a few fungi) that live there, along with the old growth species and processes that remain. As always, the walk is likely to include a few edible and medicinal species!
This site is a natural-surface walking trail that includes exposed roots and rocks in some areas. The terrian is hilly (by PEI standards). Comfortable sturdy hiking shoes or boots are recommended. This event goes rain or shine…
